What Fish Are in Lake Tahoe? A Guide to the Lake’s Most Popular Species

Lake Tahoe is known for its crystal-clear water, stunning mountain scenery, and incredible outdoor recreation. But beneath the surface of this alpine lake lies an impressive fishery that attracts anglers from across the country.

Whether you’re an experienced angler or planning your first fishing trip, Lake Tahoe offers the chance to catch several unique cold-water species. At Tahoe Sportfishing, our captains spend hundreds of days each year on the water helping guests target these fish and experience the excitement of fishing on one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

Here’s a look at the primary species you may encounter when fishing Lake Tahoe.

Mackinaw (Lake Trout)

Mackinaw—also known as Lake Trout—are the most sought-after fish in Lake Tahoe. These powerful deep-water predators can grow well over 20 pounds and are known for their strength and endurance when hooked.

Mackinaw typically inhabit the deeper areas of the lake, often between 60 and 200 feet, where cooler temperatures provide the ideal environment for them to thrive. Our captains use specialized equipment like downriggers and sonar technology to locate these fish and present bait at the correct depth.

Because of their size and strength, landing a trophy Mackinaw is often the highlight of a Lake Tahoe fishing trip.

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow Trout are another exciting species found in Lake Tahoe. Known for their vibrant colors and energetic fights, rainbow trout offer a different style of fishing compared to Mackinaw.

These fish are often found in shallower areas of the lake and are particularly active during certain seasons when baitfish move closer to shore. Rainbow trout are popular among anglers because of their aggressive strikes and acrobatic jumps once hooked.

For many guests, catching a rainbow trout provides a fun and memorable addition to their fishing adventure.

Brown Trout

Brown Trout are less common but still present in Lake Tahoe and can grow to impressive sizes. These fish tend to be more elusive and cautious than other species, making them a rewarding challenge for anglers.

Brown trout often prefer structure such as rocky ledges and drop-offs where they can ambush prey. Because of their wary nature, catching a large brown trout is considered a special accomplishment.

Kokanee Salmon

Kokanee Salmon are landlocked sockeye salmon and provide a unique fishery within Lake Tahoe. While smaller than Mackinaw, these fish are prized for their bright color and excellent table quality.

Kokanee are especially popular during their spawning season when they develop their striking red coloration. Their schooling behavior can also lead to fast-paced action when anglers locate an active group.

A Lake Built for Cold-Water Fishing

Lake Tahoe’s incredible depth—reaching over 1,600 feet in some areas—creates the perfect environment for cold-water species to thrive. The lake’s clear water, deep basins, and rocky structure provide ideal habitat for trout and salmon throughout the year.

These conditions allow Tahoe to support one of the most unique fisheries in the western United States, offering anglers the opportunity to target several species in one trip.
