Spring Fishing on Lake Tahoe: What to Expect in April

a group of people posing for a photo

Spring is here in Lake Tahoe, and it’s a great time to get back on the water. If you’re thinking about booking a fishing trip this April, here’s what you can expect.

What’s Biting Right Now?

This time of year, Mackinaw (Lake Trout) are the main catch. The cooler water temps keep them active and closer to the surface, which means better chances of reeling one in. Our captains know the lake like the back of their hand and will guide you to the best fishing spots — whether it’s your first time out or your tenth.

You might also see Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout, depending on the day, but Mackinaw are the most consistent bite in early spring.

Weather & Water Conditions

April weather on the lake is cool and crisp. Mornings start off chilly, but the sun usually warms things up as the day goes on. Layering is key. The views? Clear skies, snow-capped mountains, and calm water — this time of year is hard to beat.

And with fewer boats out, spring offers a quieter, more relaxed experience on the water.

What to Bring

We’ve got all the fishing gear covered—rods, reels, tackle, and expert tips. To stay comfortable during your trip, consider bringing:

  • Warm layers (jacket, hat, gloves)

  • Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Snacks and drinks (a cooler is provided onboard)

Why Fish in Spring?

Spring is an underrated season to fish in Tahoe. You get great conditions, active fish, and a peaceful lake before the busy summer crowds arrive. It’s the perfect time for a spontaneous weekend trip or just a relaxing day on the water.
