September Fishing Report: A Stellar Season for Kokanee

This summer has been one for the books when it comes to Kokanee salmon on Lake Tahoe. Captain Zach shared that August brought in numbers bigger than we’ve seen in years!

Schools were spread out thick across the South Shore, about 80 feet down, making for some of the best action we’ve had in a long time.

On most trips, Kokanee averaged 12–14 inches, with plenty of 15–17 inchers caught daily. The biggest fish of the season so far has measured an impressive 20 inches! If you’re looking for great table fare, Kokanee fishing has been delivering consistently.

To find success, it’s imperative to use Tahoe Trolling Company flashers, followed by a wedding ring or Hoochie tipped with white corn. While targeting Kokanee, we’ve also been picking up some nice Mackinaw Trout sitting underneath the salmon schools. Almost every trip has brought in a few bonus fish. For those wanting to focus solely on Mackinaw, live bait bouncing the bottom continues to be effective.

All in all, August and early September have brought fantastic fishing, and we’re looking forward to what’s ahead as the season progresses.
